    Friday, August 13, 2010

    buy_fresh_buy_local

Keep it up, local eaters. The USDA has just released a new report that claims a 16% increase in farmers markets across the ENTIRE nation! Pennsylvania comes in at #9 for total farmers markets (in all states) but didn’t make the top ten list for total markets’ increased in the last year. Let’s keep it up, and keep encouraging more growth in local eating - and local eating resources - everywhere!

Support the Emerald Street Urban Farm at a Puppet Performance

      tiffany-glass-mural-the-dream-garden.7577.large_slideshow

Take a trip up to increasingly green Kensington to support the Green Street Urban Farm project at York and Dauphin. PuppetTyranny will perform JM Barrie’s magical story “Peter Pan in a Kensington Garden” (not Philadelphia’s Kensington, but a Kensington all the same) in the park across from the farm on 8pm on Friday August 13th and Saturday August 14th for a suggested donation of $5 - $10. Bring a kid, bring your dog, bring a local picnic and enjoy!

      Philadelphia Weekly Press Release:

PuppeTyranny! brings its trademark sock and marionette whimsy to J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan prelude, transposing the adventures of Peter from Edwardian London’s posh Kensington Gardens to Philly’s own urban Kensington. The troupe’s ragtag band of actors, musicians, puppeteers and Lost Boys patch together shadows, animation, live music and dance to bring to life the story’s various fantastical characters, including fairy queens and invisible flying goats. Peter is as strange a creature as any: Not yet the boy crocodile hunter of Disney fame, he’s a downy newborn, escaped from his crib and convinced he’s a bird. Baby Peter’s dreamy after-hours adventures in the park are enough to push the old nostalgia button—even if our own childhood idylls involved more tube slides than immortal birds. The show repeats on Saturday. -Lauren Smith

      8pm. $5-$10. Emerald Street Urban Farm, 2312 Emerald St. 267.909.2633. puppetuprising.org

11th Red Earth Farm half share/egg share CSA

      Wednesday, August 11, 2010

      IMG_4696

A dozen eggs, mixed cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, green bell peppers, and red slicing tomatoes.  I see a lot of pickling in my future (and I’ll be sure to share my recipes)!

      IMG_4697

I love seeing those big red slicing tomatoes in the basket - my absolute favorite way to eat them is sliced into circles with a pinch of salt AND sugar on each one.  And sometimes a small basil leaf from my front porch really finishes it off right.

      Great Recycling News for Philadelphians

      mainnav-logo

Feeling depressed every time you check the bottom of a plastic container, only to not see the approved #1 or #2. Wipe that plastic-guilt tear from your eye, Philadelphians, for a better recycling system is finally here. Today the Street department announced:

STARTING AUGUST 1: Recycle All Plastic Containers!
You’ve been recycling plastic containers marked:
      #1: Soda, water bottles
#2: Milk jugs, detergents, shampoo bottles

      Now you can add:
#3: Rigid plastic containers and juice bottles
#4: Plastic tubs and lids from butter, margarine or similar products
#5: Yogurt containers and deli trays
#6: Plastic cups, plates and to-go containers
#7: Many mixed plastic containers and plastic products

In the past few years we’ve gone from bi-monthly to weekly recycling, from separating to single stream. And now we finallyhave expanded plastic recycling. Send Mayor Nutter, and the Office of Susatainability a BIG thank-you at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Of course, you should be reducing as much (or more! more!) than you are recycling. But here’s a reminder of what else you can throw in the blue bucket:

      Metal:
Tin and aluminum cans, empty aerosol cans, empty paint cans
      Glass:
      Jars and bottles
      Mixed Paper:
Newspaper, magazines, mail (junk and personal), phone books, food boxes (remove plastic liner), computer paper, flyers, wrapping paper (no foil or plastic wrap), soda and beer cartons (no food-soiled paper, please!)

Still aren’t getting your Recycling Rewards? Sign-up HERE!

Check out the beautiful sungold, grape, and red slicing tomatoes!  I also got okra again (check out Bryan’s yummy-sounding recipe in his comment on my last CSA post), and some leeks to make potato and leek soup (I’m harvesting pounds and pounds of potatoes from my community garden right now).

        Can-A-Rama 2010!

        Friday, July 23, 2010

        canning+across+america+logo

This weekend marks the 2nd year of Canning Across America’s Canvolution, and this weekend is Can-A-Rama 2010! Head out to your garden or local farmers market, dust off your jars, and get canning. I know that it’s supposed to be a hot, hot weekend in Philadelphia, but why not invite a bunch of friends over to sweat with you (or convince a friend with air-conditioning to host), make some big pitchers of ice tea (or sangria) and can in big batches, together!

Awesome Ashley over at Design*Sponge (and author of Homemade Living: Canning & Preserving with Ashley English”), has some great canning party ideas for you HERE.

And don’t forget to let us know what you’re canning!
