rasp
Three weeks ago, this was a bare-rooted stick. I dutifully planted it and have been waiting for something to happen. It did.

I LOVE raspberries. L-O-V-E them. But as we all know, the ones in stores are awful, and those at farmers’ markets can be hard to catch and can be pricey. Going out to pick them for me means getting the car share, getting lost in South Jersey, and maybe not even finding that many to pick because someone else just wiped out the ripe ones. So, I’ve wanted to try growing them in the worst way. But they get huge and bramble-y and are not appropriate for a container.

Happily, I am buying the one South Philly house I’ve seen which yard isn’t totally paved. I’m aware that the soil is probably full of crap, literally and figuratively, but it’s a start. In two weeks, I can plant this stick with leaves and its companion (at this point without leaves, but it’s a different variety), plus a dwarf pie cherry tree I acquired at the same time (sour cherries being my #2 among fruits) in the ground...and wait some more. Fingers crossed, everyone!

(This little leaf is on a Latham raspberry, purchased mid-Atlantically from Miller Nurseries. It was $3.75—you can’t buy a cup of raspberries for $3.75 most days, so it seemed like an ok investment.)
