One Local Summer - Week 1: South
Tuesday, June 10, 2008
Here is the South, our growing seasons start a little earlier than everyone else, making it a little easier to work some fantastic produce into our first One Local Summer Meals. Everyone cooked such great meals this week that it’s making me look forward to seeing what else we come up with this summer.
Christy at Farm Dreams made a special meal for her dad’s visit, starting with locally raised steak.
E. at Outpost 505 cooked up some lovely sounding ham and beets. Also, check out her bonus meal from last week. I’m jealous about those sausages; they look amazing.
Amy managed three terrific looking meals with local foodstuffs, pictured here, here, and here. As the temperature tops out at 100 degrees this week in NC, I am totally stealing the cucumber and cream cheese sandwich idea.
The folks at Bridgman Pottery ate well this week, with local polenta, vegetables, goat cheese, and sausage.
The folks at Tennessee Locavore had an entire weekend of great sounding local food.
Louise at Sing Your Heart served up chard, garlic scape pesto, and lamb loin chops.
Jasmine at Knitting 40 shades of Green put together a great looking frittata.
Dinner at The Herbwife’s Kitchen included, among other goodies, homemade English muffins and homemade cottage cheese. I am seriously impressed.
Madeline at Barn-Raising prepared hamburgers, salad and roasted vegetables with her family, along with fruit for dessert. Later on in the week, they had a bonus meal of local pork chops, with broccoli and potatoes from the farm.
Heather at Simple - Green - Frugal documents a whole day of eating local. Go Heather!
Capturing Today’s dinner featured pork chops from their own pork.
Over at The Garden Apartment, a trip to a new farmer’s market produced tomato soup and short ribs.
Mel at Thiryo prepared great looking roasted beets and radishes over assorted greens.
At Walnut Spinney, they indulged in a locally-based stirfry, including homegrown vegetables.
C. at Foodie Tots also had an entire day of local eating. Wow!
Reynie at Southern Girl Rambling had Corn, peas, and okra, all from her freezer. It’s not quite corn season down here yet, and I’m jealous of those who have corn from last year preserved.
Finally, we had something simple this week over at Low Mileage Food: quiche and vegetables.

One note: I know that a lot of folks are touchy about posting their real names on the Internet. I took a quick look at everyone’s posts/blogs, and if I couldn’t easily tell whether you were identifying yourself, I listed you only by your blog name. If you don’t mind being referred to by name or nickname, let me know in next week’s email!
