I’m confused by this stuff supposedly being local - it says it’s produced in Monrovia, CA by Modern Spirits?

It is a bit confusing. Root was designed (the recipe created, the bottle and label designed) by a local collective who owns the store Art in The Age of Mechanical Reproduction. It is based on an old Philadelphia recipe by Charles Hires. While it is produced in CA, it is only available for purchase in Pennsylvania. A bit of a hybrid. You can learn more about it here:

Support a local farmer, crave the freshest produce, worry about what's in or on your food - whatever your reason for eating locally grown and produced food in the Philadelphia area, Farm to Philly is probably writing about it. We're focused on where to find it, how to grow it, and what to do with it!
