Eat local with us this Summer!

Registration for One Local Summer is now closed.
For several years, Liz from the now-defunct blog Pocket Farm organized and hosted One Local Summer, a challenge to prepare one meal each week using locally grown ingredients. I really enjoyed participating, and was sad to see Liz close up shop. In that grand tradition, Farm to Philly is hosting its own One Local Summer project, specifically for the Mid-Atlantic states (Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia). Edited to note: Farm to Philly will now be hosting the entire One Local Summer project - national and international participants welcome!
Participants will be expected to make one meal each week using locally grown ingredients (we use the typical 100 mile radius definition - your definition may vary). The permissible exceptions to this rule are oil, salt and pepper, and spices. June 1 is a Sunday this year, which makes it the perfect day to start the challenge! Make your meal and post about it on your blog (or send us an email with details if you don’t have a blog) - we’ll swing by on Sunday each week to get the details, and a post will go up here on Monday detailing the fantastic meals everyone had the week prior.
The final day of the challenge will be Sunday, August 31.
I found this to be a really motivating challenge over all, and it really challenged me to find new sources for locally grown foods. Your meals don’t have to be fancy and complicated - just made from locally grown ingredients! Interested? Leave a comment and we’ll keep you posted!

I am starting a new food blog for Berks County (the “Reading” part of the Reading Terminal Market. I will sign up to give this a try. What should I do to register? Is there a badge? My site will not be ready for another few weeks.
I participated in OLS last summer and it was great fun! My whole family got in on the act and we had a great summer. One of the best parts about it was finding places to buy food other than the grocery store.
Can’t wait for this year’s OLS!
We’re in, although we may make it a 0 mile challenge once the garden gets into full swing…
Let me know if you want help with the round-ups!
Whoops - corrected my email so you can find me…
I think we’ll give it a try this summer. Our bigger garden this year should really help out. In fact, just last night, we had grilled eggplant from the garden with our dinner!
I looked for a place to sign up for the challenge a few weeks ago and was disappointed when I couldn’t find one. Thanks for picking up the reins and count me in.
Hooray! Count me in. Expect reports from the bustling Moscow, ID farmers market…and meals featuring a lot of potatoes.
I’m looking forward to participating this year. I found out about OLS too late in the summer last year and was disappointed to find out that OLS would not continue (until now!). Thanks for taking over so I can officially try this out!
I would love to take part in this for a third summer. Also, is it possible to get a feed for Bloglines? I tried to add the site but it didn’t show up as having an RSS feed although I notice there is one in the upper left hand corner.
count us in!
We’re in!
I’m in for sure!
Count me in! Let me know if you need help rounding up the East!
I wanted to join last year but with the chaos of moving across the country I figured I’d wait. I’m excited to see how this summer rolls out.
I would love to participate in this years one local summer! Count me in! I just started a blog for this very reason, hopefully I can pick up some tips along the way from other bloggers.
Count me in!
Count in my family, too!
Please count us in this year as well. We had a great time participating for the first time last year! Glad to see it will continue on!
I would love to do this. I have changelled myself a couple of times over the past year to do things like eating local and “meeting my meat” and buying only direct. We just had our first foraged and from our garden dinner the other night, so yes, count me in!
best,
riana
I’m in! I am going to try to convince some people from my area to join as well. I’ll promote it on my poor sad new localvore blog. (http://www.MmmMonadnock.com)
i would like to participate….is pasta okay to use?
Count us in - I’m up for a good challenge (once the garden gets going it could be a 0 mile challence for us).
We’re in.
I’m also available to act as a regional coordinator, if you still need one down south.
We’re in North Carolina.
Count me in! I look forward to participating.
I look forward to this project, also because I’m relocating to a new region, and this seems like a fun way to get acquainted with what the area has to offer in terms of cuisine and distribution.
Saw this linked from Liz’s flickr site and thought it sounded like an inspiring group. We buy a lot of local products but I don’t always challenge myself to make a completely local meal, so this will be a great excuse. Thanks for hosting.
Count me in!!!
Thanks for organizing this. Please add us to the list.
I love these. They really add structure to my meal plans. Thank you!
Count the Shibaguyz in! Made it through last year’s challenges and just emerged from the Dark Days Challenge. Bring on the summer!! WOOHOO!! Check out our blog for our progress so far.
Oh I am all over this, thanks so much for organizing it!
I’d like to join the challenge! I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a long time, just not disciplined to do it on my own:)
yes please! looking forward to the weekly reminder!
Thanks for taking this on. I’m new to the locavore movement and read all of last year’s OLS entries as part of my research. I’m so happy to have an opportunity to use this challenge to move my local eating up to another level.
Me too, me too!
I would love to do this!
I’d love to participate this year! Count us in.
I’m in!
count me in.
I would very much like to participate! I’ve followed Pocket Farm in the past (on the side lines) and last year was my first CSA adventure. I will have to create a site first before I can share a URL for where I will post the food, but definately Count Me In! Stephanie
Hey there! I would love to play along! I’ve got my own veggie garden but this would challenge me to expand my meat, fish, and dairy to local farmers as well! Can’t wait to get started!
So I’m game. I need to spice up my world a little and be less culinarily lame. Consider me signed up.
I am so in for this.
I was too late to sign up each of the past two years, and thought I wouldn’t have another chance. I’m very glad that you’re continuing One Local Summer. I’d be happy to help with roundups for the Pacific Northwest or West Coast.
I’m new to the blog world and new to locavore living, so this should be a great challenge! Can’t wait until my own garden takes off, but hopefully I’ll find what I need at the local farmers’ markets…
I wanted to do this last year, but didn’t find out about it until it was too late to sign up. Glad to see you’re continuing the event. I’m totally in this year! Sign me up!
Definitely count me in! We’ve been enjoying this every year.
Splendid! Couldn’t wait for this to start up as I missed it last year. We’ve just moved, and we’re searching for our local food sources all over again - this will be fun!
i’m in. i’ve got 13 typse of heirloom tomatoes in my garden
I’d love to participate! I’m a first timer to the One Local Summer though I did participate - and grow alot - in the Dark Days Eat Local Challenge. Looking forward to it.
This will be my first year to participate. I am looking forward to the challenge! Can’t wait to hear what everyone else is cooking up with their local grown treasures.
I do not have a blog, i participated last year and would love to be included this year by e-mailing my entry.
Thanks Laurie
I’d love to participate this summer. I found out about OLS just past last year’s deadline so I’d love to participate this year.
Yes, please count me! This positive motivation has been heaven sent.
Just planted a new seed at this blog for future growth. Here I will happily participate
Thanks so much for taking the reins! We’re so in! I’m happy to be a reporter for the Mid-Atlantic region if you’re still looking for volunteers.
Thanks for keeping the challenge going. I think we’re going to give it a try this year.
This is a great idea! I’m in.
(and daily dreaming of my sweet sweet CSA Plums…)
Definitely in. Happy to help recap.
We’ve got a small fire escape and access to all the home grown wonders of Brooklyn! Count us in…
Have never participated before but want to give it a try this year.
Pam
This is just what I’ve been looking for! Glad you’re hosting the whole U.S.
Tried to comment earlier, but it didn’t go through—but I’d love to participate!
I’m in! My husband and I run our local CSA and farmers market and are really looking forward to this year’s OLS!
This sounds like a great idea. Where do I sign up/register?
Sign me up! I enjoyed the Dark Days challenge, and now we’ll have a whole CSA share just waiting to be turned into bloggable meals.
Yes! We are in, thanks to Green Bean for the recommendation. I have been attempting a locavore challenge for the month of May, but it’s hard here in the cold weather region. I am now educated and ready to take on this challenge! I will post my meals on my blog - www.ecoburban.blogspot.com Thanks for doing this! - Mandi
Count me in. I’m looking forward to the challenge.
Me & my family are in! CSA starts soon, farmer’s market after that, maybe someday my garden will yield… I should be good to go!
I am in!
Last year I just marveled at all the wonderful dishes I saw prepared from local ingredients and hope to be as resourceful.
I’m new to this eating style and just decided to start this challenge on my own. It’s great to see that a group is doing this together. Do you know if there is a similar challenge within other parts of the country? Thanks!
Yes, I’d love to join in the challenge this summer!
I’m in! Last year was so much fun, I can’t wait to see what everyone cooks up this time!
This is great! I just started a blog about doing this in an urban environment. I look forward to the continued challenge.
Sign us up! Our CSA starts soon and our container garden is ready to go. Maybe we can finally figure out what to do with all the swiss chard we get! Maybe we will even start a blog.
This year is my first in a CSA and I’m really looking forward to it. Please count me in for the One Local Summer challenge.
I would love to participate this year. Thanks!
Sounds like fun!
Count me in! I’m very excited about this. I’ve decided that, since I can’t so anything about my long commute to work at present, I might as well cut down on food miles by shopping as much as possible from the 4 farm shops I drive past!
Love to join in—We try for at least 50% local/homegrown at most meals and DH is constantly adding to the garden to keep up with the demand around here so this will just be more motivation!
I want to sign up too!!
our farmer’s market is open. our csa is about to start. (our garden is not yet planted! yikes. so much rain lately.) and we’re excited to participate in one local summer. thanks for organizing!
Oh, I’m in!
I’m in as well. I have no excuse
time.
Count me in! I have been meaning to sign up for weeks now
Nicole, count me in!
I read about the challenge on Green Bean Dreams. I’m definitely in and will post on my blog: http://simple-green-frugal.blogspot.com/
I’m in, and so is my family, they just don’t know it yet.
Fantastic idea!
What a great way for us to get better acquainted with local foods… Consider us in!
I’d like to sign up as well. I did participate in the Dark Days challenge but fell off the wagon when I got sick and tired of eating root veggies. Summer will be a breeze…so please sound me in.
I would love to participate! Just let me know any more information I need to know about it.
Count me in, too!
We are in too! We joined our first CSA this year, and we are in our third year of gardening (well, fifth if you count the two container gardens), so I’m very excited to work on including this in my life more.
Count me in!
I have sort of fallen off the blogwagon the last 3 months… I need a commitment like this
Our little city just started a local farmer’s market and there’s another great one just down the road. This sounds like a fun challenge, my first one on the blog-o-sphere. I’m looking forward to all the tasty homegrown recipes.
Count me in too, please!
I think I’m in! (now if only the local produce would start rolling into the farmer’s market…)

I may give this a go this summer! I have a question: What about bread? If you buy it from a local bakery, do the ingredients of the bread have to be local too?
