CSA 2007 #10

This week’s share:

Plum tomatoes- some were damaged when I brought them home.
Nordello peppers- new to me. Described as mildly hot.
Turnips- these are mild, almost potato-like in their consistency and flavor.
Leeks- made roasted leeks last week, which were delicious.
Mustard greens- pungent. Not sure what I’ll do with these yet.
Flat-leaf parsley

So…I really should know more about the Red Earth CSA, considering that it’s facilitated by my organization, but…how does it work?  This is different than the partial share I picked up for a friend on Tuesday; it had the plum tomatoes and some peppers (different colored ones, not all red ones like yours), but then an eggplant, a head of lettuce, a bag of salad mix, and a quart of weirdly-sized and -colored tomatoes.

Joanna—the Red Earth CSA allows its members to pick which produce they want from a list of those available. Red Earth has a password-protected members site through the Farm to City website (as you’re probably aware), and from here, it’s just a matter of typing in the quantities of what I’d like to have for the following week. Orders are open Thursday-Sunday for pickup for the week following.

For a partial share, I’m allowed up to 6 items. If I forget to specify what I would like for a given week, the items in my share become farmer’s choice. I try to avoid this, because they tend to foist lettuce on me, which is not my favorite vegetable. raspberry

I like that Red Earth is a “members’ choice” CSA. The list does tend to fluctuate depending on what crops are viable at any given time, but I like having the option to decide what produce I’d like to have every week.

And an addendum: I tried the Nordello peppers last night. They’re sweet—not hot at all. I roasted them with the plum tomatoes, and they were mighty fine.

Ah ha!  That’s what Bob meant when he referred to the ‘member’s choice’ feature!  He was explaining something else, and I didn’t want to sidetrack him by asking for an explanation at that moment.  Cool, thanks for the explanation.

My friend also has a partial share, and perhaps she left it as ‘farmer’s choice’ and thus ended up with a head of lettuce + salad mix.  wink

Glad the peppers were tasty!  I couldn’t resist buying some mini peppers the other week, but maybe I’ll try some other, larger varieties of sweet peppers soon.
