farmers market haul 9-9

This last Sunday, my friend Shay and I headed down to the Headhouse Square to be there at the beginning of the market.  I had learned my lesson from my previous trip when there hadn’t been much left in the final hour of the market.  At 10:15 am it was already crammed with people.  One thing that Shay pointed out that I hadn’t really noticed before was how most people patiently wait in line to be served at this market.  She said she had never seen anything like it before, and now that she mentions it, I realize she’s right.  Normally there’s more of a cluster effect at markets, as opposed to this peculiar lining up.

It seemed like the vendors were a bit sparse as well.  I wonder if the fact that summer is over (at least in terms of our mental calendar) is keeping some folks away.  Despite all that, there was still lots of good stuff to be had.  I spent $19.60 and came home with many goodies.

6 ears of corn
1 red pepper
2 green peppers
2 white eggplants (2 for a $1!)
1 bunch beets
2 gnarled heirloom tomatoes
1 dozen eggs
1 bag lemon balm
1 bunch of broccoli
1 bunch basil

Who is the egg purveyor over there?  Are they from pastured chickens?

Hey Marisa and Nicole - A couple comments for you both.

About the eggs, there are two vendors offering eggs, one of which is from a farm above Allentown raising pasture chickens (their stand is right in the middle of the arcade - across from mine/Weavers Way).  The other is not pasture raised but they are organic I believe.

Second - as to why there were fewer vendors this past week, it wasn’t because produce is fading away with summer. There will be many fall crops to keep the market booming for several more weeks.  It was instead due to a few folks having car/truck breakdowns on the highway and two other vendors going over to Green Fest instead for the day.  I would suspect it’ll be back up to full capacity again this coming Sunday. Hope to see you both there!
